Gathering
A typical Catholic mass has multiple songs in it. The first of these songs is a gathering song. Some of the musicians who write these songs JUST MISS THE POINT with their lyrics, though. I've compiled two lists, one of good messages and one of lousy messages. I hope that no other explanation is needed.
Correct:
We gather to praise and worship God.
God is good and great and merciful and incredible and glorious.
The Holy Spirit is with us.
We gather to celebrate the triumph of Jesus' birth.
We gather to celebrate Jesus' death for our sins.
Incorrect:
We gather because there are a lot of us.
We gather because today is Sunday.
We gather so that we can give to the poor.
We gather because we're diverse and some of us are black.
We gather and so do gay people, not that there's anything wrong with that.
We gather because we're hungry and there's a feast with delicious foods.
We gather to chat with our friends.
We gather to gossip.
We gather in a church that was put up by architects and sit on furniture that was built by carpenters and we got here on a road that was designed by civil engineers, because everybody likes working together.
We gather, but we don't have to since we can worship however we want.
We gather because it's a holiday.
We gather and you don't, neener neener.
Gathering is justice.
Gathering is politically correct.
Catholics and Muslims and Baptists and Mormons and Atheists and Jews gather together.
We are righteous.
Slavery is not nice.
Each of us is special in his own way.
We gather because we are feminists.
Since we're gathered anyway, we might as well mention God.
The choir sings while we gather.
Heaven is an eternal picnic.
We gather to celebrate American history.
We gather in the morning, not at night.
Gathering is a sacrifice.
The correct list is not intended to be complete, just to give an example of a few good themes for gathering songs, so that non-Catholics have an idea of what's going on here. The incorrect list, however, is intended to include every poorly written gathering song I've ever seen or heard (at least the ones that I could think of).
